Remember when 1TB hard disks were a big deal? Seagate has upped the ante by introducing a new 8TB hard disk that will cost only US$260 (approximately RM900). Of course, such a huge storage space with a little price tag always comes with a catch.
This new 8TB hard disk is part of Seagate’s new “Archive HDD” lineup. Priced at only RM900, it is a very tempting offer; but don’t expect to do any fast data transfer with it. At 5,900RPM and an average read/write speed of only 150MB/s, it is much slower than an SSD or even a 7,200RPM hard disk.
It’s not the fastest hard disk around, but at this price point, you can’t really complain. With 8TB of storage space, it’s perfect to work as a backup drive for least used files or important data that need multiple backups. It can also be paired with a fast SSD for the best of both worlds.

In order to cram 8TB worth of storage into this 3.5-inch hard disk, Seagate utilises its very own Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology. If 8TB of storage is too much for you, there are also options for 6TB and 5TB.
Desktop builders or consumers who are looking for a cheap storage option will find Seagate’s latest offering a godsend. Shipping of the 8TB drive will begin on January 2015, but no word yet of its availability for the Malaysian market.
