Like it or not, Facebook is possibly one of the most used service by everyone around the world. Whatever topics and stories that goes on will definitely pop up in Facebook, and sometimes, you’ll even see the breaking news on the social network even before it hits official news portals. Facebook recently posted up its very own year in review for the year 2014, which shows the most talked about topics around the world including the unfortunate Malaysia Airlines tragedies, World Cup, Ice Bucket Challenge and more.
Sports is definitely the most talked-about subject for the year, with World Cup, Super Bowl, Sochi Olympics taking up the first, eighth and tenth positions. The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil has got more conversations than any other events in Facebook’s history. Super Bowl may not be a big deal for us Malaysians, but the Super Bowl XLViII that was held in February 2014 generated so much hype that it’s one of the top topics of the year, followed by the Olympics, the 22nd Winter Olympic Games that was held in Sochi, Russia.
Malaysia Airlines’ double tragedies that happened within months of each other is the seventh most talked about topic of the year. On 8 March 2014, Malaysia Airlines MH370 mysteriously vanished when it was flying between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing. The flight was carrying a total of 239 passengers and crews from 14 different countries. Fast-forward four months later, Malaysia Airlines MH317 that was traveling back to Kuala Lumpur crashed near the village of Grabove, Ukraine.
Other most talked about topics of this year includes the Ebola virus outbreak, elections in Brazil, the passing of Robin Williams, the Ice Bucket Challenge, Confilcts in Gaza, and Michael Brown / Ferguson. The full list is as follows:
