After the arrival of the “New” 3DS and 3DS XL in Japan on 11th October, Nintendo seems to be planning to discontinue the production of the older 3DS XL in the land of the rising sun. In its Japanese website, all seven colours of the first 3DS XL model have the “ending production soon” notice, along with select 3DS colour options.
Nintendo did not specify when the production for the older 3DS XL will stop, but this move is likely to focus on the New 3DS and 3DS XL, which has sold a whopping 230,000 units in a span of only two days. It may be safe to assume that Nintendo will discontinue the older 3DS XL in other regions as well once the newer model is introduced in the respective regions.
As for the smaller 3DS model, only certain colours are being discontinued. The only colour options available after the discontinuation are Pure White, Clear Black, Metallic Red, Light Blue, and Gloss Pink. Nonetheless, the older 3DS will still be available in Japan.
The New 3DS and 3DS XL is currently only available in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. These two handheld consoles are set to hit North America and Europe sometime next year, but no words yet on other regions such as Asia.
