The Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Huawei and Lenovo may be doing extremely well this year but despite their performance, it looks like the big guys are still on top.
According to Digitimes Research, Samsung, Apple and LG are the top three smartphone vendors in 3Q2014, as well as the first three quarters of the year. The report is based on third-quarter reports released by individual vendors and data from makers in the supply chain.
As expected, the Chinese players such as Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo follows in closely at fourth, fifth and seventh position respectively for the same period. As for growth, it’s without a doubt Xiaomi is the most impressive with nearly 200% on-year shipment growth while ZTE, another well-known Chinese player, has fallen out of the top 10 list.
Unfortunately, Digitimes did not release a break down in numbers for its report. According to other research centres like IHS iSuppli and IDC, some Chinese players have already surpassed LG in terms of smartphone shipment for the third quarter of the year.
IDC’s report for top 5 smartphone vendors in Q32014 (based on preliminary data)
Digitimes Research’s report ends by saying that the global smartphone shipments for the year 2014 are expected to reach 1.219 billion units, growing less than 30% year on year. As for next year, Digitimes Research estimate that the global smartphone shipments will expand 22% on-year to 1.488 billion units.
