Paranoid Android, a hugely popular custom ROM that has quite a number of followers in the ROM flashing community, is now collaborating with Project Ara competitor Vsenn. With this collaboration, any Vsenn smartphone that flashes to the Paranoid Android ROM would not have its warranty voided.
Under normal circumstances, any Android smartphone that is running a custom ROM would have its warranty voided. Vsenn decided to take advantage of this and introduces the “Approved ROM Program,” which Paranoid Android is a part of. Any custom ROM under this program can be flashed without worries of voiding Vsenn’s warranty, which is an interesting prospect for tech enthusiasts.
Android smartphone users usually flash to a custom ROM for improved software or additional features that stock ROMs generally do not have. ROM flashing is also prominent among users of older Android smartphones in order to enjoy Android versions that are not officially available for their smartphone model. It is good to see Vsenn supporting this, albeit only for the Paranoid Android custom ROM right now.
It is unclear what are Vsenn’s requirements in order for a ROM to be eligible for the Approved ROM Program. More likely than not, stability is the main concern. With that said, it won’t be surprising to see other big custom ROM developers such as CyanogenMod or AOKP to be a part of the program. That is, assuming that Vsenn’s idea of a modular Android smartphone takes off.
