Previously, you would need an Office 365 subscription to create and edit Microsoft Office contents on the iPad, while the iPhone and Android version were able to do that for quite some time now. But that’s not the case any more; you can now create and edit Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint slides for free on all three platforms, with the Android tablet version coming in early 2015.
This was a move by Microsoft that is in-line with their vision of “Office everywhere;” to bring Microsoft Office to any user across all devices. Of course, more advanced editing options are only available to subscribers of Office 365.
It’s worth noting that this free service is only available for regular consumers. Business users who have their files stored in OneDrive for Business or Dropbox for Business would still require a subscription of Office 365 to be able to do any editing.
The Android tablet version is still under development, but users will be able to sign up for the preview. It is expected to be available in early 2015 for the general public.
