Illegear is back with a new gaming laptop in the Z5. The company’s latest entry into what is becoming an increasingly competitive segment, this budget gaming laptop still manages to squeeze an Intel Core i7 and Nvidia GTX 860M into the 15.6-inch form factor.
Powering the Illegear Z5 is the Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5GHz quad-core processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz), which is part of Intel’s high performance range of mobile processors. As far as gaming notebooks go, this appears to be the standard these days; and any shortcomings are made up with a more powerful GPU. In this case, there’s an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM. Considering that NVIDIA’s 900 series mobile GPUs aren’t on the market yet, this is a perfectly acceptable tradeoff. Especially considering it still manages to pack 4GB of VRAM; a number that Illegear is saying is that many new games are recommending for smooth gameplay.
Rounding out the base specifications are a Corsair 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L single-channel RAM (upgradeable to 16GB dual-channel), Seagate 500GB SSHD (and there’s two MSATA slots for SSDs as well), and a 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080p Full HD anti-glare display. One thing to note is that the Z5 does not come with any operating system pre-installed; leaving users to either load one on their own or pay a little more for the option. On the other hand, the Z5 also packs in a subwoofer alongside the standard stereo speakers, as well as four programmable macro keys. The Z5’s design also incorporate LED backlit keyboard, while the trackpad and even the back lid has red LED illumination. Connectivity wise, the Illegear Z5 packs four USB ports (3x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0 with power charge), HDMI and VGA-out, RJ-45, and a 4-in-1 card reader.
What will inevitably set the Illegear Z5 apart from the competition (most of which pack the same Core i7-4710HQ and GTX 860M combo) is with Illegear’s cooling system on the Z5. This gaming laptop packs a dual-heatpipe, dual-vent and dual-fan cooling solution, while the company will also switch the standard thermal compound to IC Diamond for a charge. In a Furmark 1080p burn-in test, the GTX 860M GPU recorded only 66 degrees Celcius after 45 minutes.
The Illegear Z5 is now available through Illegear’s online store starting at RM3,799.
