It is so rare for a top exec from one company to publicly praise the product of another (competitor) company. But then again, Hugo Barra is not a normal top executive. The VP of Xiaomi Global has gone on record to state that the new iPhone 6 is “the most beautiful smartphone ever built”.
Speaking at the WSJD Live conference recently, the former head of Android praised Apple’s latest iPhone, which is made from a single piece of metal and is thinner than ever before. Specifically, Barra states that it is the best-looking smartphone ever made – even if the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have divided opinion over its design.
At the same time, Barra also took the opportunity to state that the iPhone 6’s design is reminiscent of another exceptionally-crafted smartphone, the HTC One. He noted that the iPhone 6 “carries design that is very HTC-like”, with a “somewhat familiar design language”. His statement came amidst more questions raised to him regarding his current company, Xiaomi, and its perception in the West as an Apple clone. Besides referring to the design, Barra also pointed out that iOS borrows heavily from Android, such as quick toggles – though he admitted that it is better executed on iOS.
Interestingly, Barra also left some hints regarding its upcoming products; specifically with regards to their design. “…when you look at the stuff that’s coming next from us, you’re going to see some unique new twists,” he said.
