Wizards of the Coast is relaunching the troubled Magic 2015 Duels of the Planeswalkers to address issues that have plagued the title. Criticism of additional in-app/in-game purchases on top of the initial price of buying the game. The updated version of the game will allow players to earn more in game packs without spending money, and make it cheaper to obtain all the campaigns for the mobile version.
The relaunched Magic 2015 DotP will include a renewed multiplayer mode for players to earn booster packs to increase their card pool; as opposed to the original launch that required spending real money to get virtual cards. This change brings the game closer to the kind of low budget game that has made Blizzard’s Hearthstone a runaway hit.
Those who have already spent money to buy premium booster packs will receive additional compensation if they have spent more than US$9.99. Although developer Stainless Games has not clarified what this means; only that the compensation will scale according with the amount spent on the game.
A new expansion pack called Garruk’s Revenge is also being launched on 5 November, and will cost US$4.99 to buy. The expansion brings with it four new campaigns, as well as more cards from the multicolour themed Alara sets.
