The end of eSports largest gaming tournament drew to an end yesterday with team Samsung White winning the coveted title of League of Legends World Champion. Held in Seoul’s Sangam stadium, the event also drew a crowd to see popular rock outfit Imagine Dragons perform the theme song of the tournament.
Samsung White, one of two Samsung sponsored teams, stormed to the finals against Chinese team Star Horn Royal Club. There was never any question that that the Korean team would make it to the finals as they had swept aside all competition while losing only two matches throughout the entire tournament. The final best-of-five match turned into 3-1 rout, as the team proved too efficient for their Chinese counterparts. To their credit, Star Horn Royal Club refused to give up without a fight and did their best to overturn each match. This also makes the second year in the a row that Star Horn Royal Club has finished as the first runner up.
The 2014 World Championship MVP went to Samsung White’s Mata, who proved to be a superb support player while providing strategic information for his team. Mata finished the tournament with 18 kills, 27 deaths, and 253 assists. Samsung White took home a total of US$1 million in prize money for their efforts; and while it wasn’t as big a prize pool as Valve’s Dota 2 TI4, later statistics will quite likely show that it drew more viewers to watch the finals.
Imagine Dragons also provided a post tournament concert, which is goes to show just how much effort Riot Games has put into this event. Those interested should check out the embedded video above which includes game four of the finals, as well as the after party. At the very least, it also shows tournament MVP Mata’s one hope for the tournament.
