Just weeks after NVIDIA launched its brand new GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 graphics cards for desktop PC, here comes their mobile equivalent: the new GeForce GTX 980M and GTX 970M. They are the first product from NVIDIA new GeForce GTX 900M family and are based on the Maxwell architecture just like their desktop counterparts.
With the new GPUs, NVIDIA claims that the company has managed to further reduce the gap between desktop and notebook graphics performances. As a comparison, the company stated that the performances between GTX 980M for laptops and GTX 980 for desktop is only around 20% as opposed to two years ago whereby the differences between GTX 680M and GTX 680 were around 40%.
That statement is not surprisingly though as it turns out that NVIDIA has implemented quite a number of features from the desktop counterparts of both GPUs. These features include the Dynamic Super Resolution, Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing and Voxel Global Illumination. However, the VR Direct feature was somehow not included in the GTX 980M and GTX 970M.
Initially introduced in GeForce 800M GPU series, NVIDIA also claims that it has made some improvements on its Battery Boost technology. One such improvements is the new “On Battery” settings within the GeForce Experience software which allows gamers to customize graphics settings for their games that will only activate if gamers choose to game while on battery.
Other than that, the company also managed to increase the performance level of the technology that is generally designed to provide playable game experience to gamers while maximising as much battery life as possible. Meanwhile, here is the comparison between reference specifications between both GPUs:
Among the first batch of laptops that will be equipped with the new GeForce GTX 980M and GTX 970M are Aorus X7, ASUS RoG G751, Clevo P150 (available in Malaysia as Illegear RS-15; more on that in subsequent post), MSI GS60, MSI GS70 and MSI GT72. Also confirmed is the Gigabyte P35W (we recently reviewed the GTX 800M version of the laptop) which is apparently the slimmest GTX 900M-based laptop to be made available at the launch of the new GPUs.
