Hot on the heels of Samsung, HTC Malaysia has also announced a new smartphone for the Malaysian market today. Good thing is, both smartphones launched today are technically not in the same target market. Say hello to the Butterfly 2, HTC’s other flagship smartphone with 13MP Duo Camera.
Not to be confused with the “main” flagship smartphone (the One M8), the Butterfly 2 is actually HTC’s flagship from the Butterfly silo, which is clad in plastic and offers its own unique design. It offers essentially the same specs as the One M8, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM, 5-inch Full HD Super LCD 3 display, 16GB of internal storage with microSD card support of up to 128GB, and LTE connectivity. There’s an IR sensor onboard, too.
There are some very big differences between the new Butterfly 2 and One M8, however. Besides the thicker polycarbonate-clad body, the Butterfly 2 packs a slightly larger 2700mAh battery, and more importantly a new Duo Camera setup. This time around, HTC has fitted a larger, 13MP f/2.0 rear sensor with the secondary depth sensor instead of the UltraPixel sensor found on the M8. This alone can be seen as HTC fixing the one major criticism many threw HTC’s way.
On top of that, the Butterfly 2 is also IP57-rated for dust and water resistance. Additionally, HTC also introduces what it calls a flap-free water-resistant design, where the microUSB port and 3.5mm audio jack are not covered while the SIM and microSD card tray are integrated as covers.
On the software front, the Butterfly 2 is essentially the same as the M8, save for one or two refinements. There’s Motion Launch, BlinkFeed, Zoe, Extreme Power Saving Mode and more. In the U Focus app, users can now tweak the level of depth (or blurriness of the background) to suit your taste. On top of that, HTC also worked with JBL to fine tune the BoomSound speakers.
The new HTC Butterfly 2 is now available at all authorised retail outlets nationwide at a retail price of RM2299. It is currently available in two colours, the matte Canvas White and glossy Rogue Red. For more information, head on to the official product page for the Butterfly 2 here.
