Not too long after its global announcement, Samsung Malaysia has officially announced the arrival of the new Galaxy Alpha smartphone, the company’s first metal-framed Galaxy device. As part of the launch celebration, Samsung is even giving away a free Gear 2 smartwatch for lucky new owners of the Galaxy Alpha.
The first Samsung device to feature the company’s new design language – which it calls “the evolution of Galaxy design” – the Galaxy Alpha is a pretty sleek device. Featuring a new metal frame and a more sophisticated look despite the subtle design changes, the Alpha looks a lot more premium that previous Galaxy smartphones. And at just 115g and 6.7mm thick, the Alpha is also one of the smallest smartphones around.
The Galaxy Alpha packs a 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, and is powered by a Samsung Exynos octa-core chipset (1.8GHz quad-core + 1.3GHz quad-core) with 2GB of RAM. There’s 32GB of non-expandable internal storage, but the 1860mAh battery is a removable one. It also runs on the latest Android 4.4.4, and also features a slightly altered and toned-down TouchWiz UI.
As for the camera, the Galaxy Alpha features a new 12MP rear camera sensor that records 4K video, while in front there’s a 2.1MP shooter. And, just like the flagship Galaxy S5, the Alpha also packs plenty of sensors, including heart rate, fingerprint, hall, and the more usual accelerometer, gyro, geomagnetic and proximity sensors. There’s also NFC and LTE Cat 6 support, which is an interesting addition to a device that Samsung does not consider to be a flagship product, but rather a “stylephone”. This may be the only time we’re referring it as such.

To celebrate the launch of the Galaxy Alpha, Samsung is also giving away a free Gear 2 smartwatch for the first 100 customers who purchase the Alpha at the Samsung Experience Stores in The Gardens, Kuala Lumpur as well as in Gurney Paragon, Penang. In addition, those who purchase the device in Maxis Centre in KLCC will also receive the free smartwatch. So that’s 300 free smartwatches worth RM899 each in total that Samsung is giving away.
On top of that, the first 200 Galaxy Alpha owners will also be able to redeem a complimentary 2 days 1 night stay at the Deluxe Safari Tent at Caravan Serai, worth RM470. Redemption of this deal can be made at the Galaxy Life app, and those who redeem should note that the deal is only available until December 31, 2014. Hence, if you’re one of the first 200 owners of the Galaxy Alpha, you actually stand to gain freebies that are worth almost as much as the Galaxy Alpha itself, which will retail for RM1899.
The Galaxy Alpha is available immediately in all Samsung Experience Stores nationwide as well as authorised retailers. The smartphone can also be purchased via telco bundles, with U Mobile and Maxis already accepting orders. Priced at RM1899, the Galaxy Alpha is available now in Black and White, while the Silver and Gold colourways are expected to be available “in the coming weeks”.
