The Pokemon company has announced the existence of the Pokemon fighting game that many fans have been waiting for. Built on a fighting style similar to Tekken, courtesy of a partnership with Bandai-Namco, the game is apparently being named Pokken Tournament. Just in case players aren’t aware of the link between the two games.
Pokken Tournament will be released as an arcade only game in Japan at some point in 2015, with no news about whether it will be ported to consoles; or even if it will end up in other markets. At the very least, there is a short teaser trailer featuring two Fighting-type Pokemon (what else?) that shows just how much like Tekken this game is going to be.
Gematsu is reporting that development of the game is being lead by Tekken series director Katushiro Harada and Soulcalibur series main programmer Masaaki Hoshino. Two people who have had a long history of providing enjoyable and interesting games in this genre; although how they intend to squeeze some of the less humanoid Pokemon into the game will be very interesting to see.
Would it be too much to ask to see a Pokken Tag Tournament with six-Pokemon tag teams?
