The Sony Xperia Z series are great water-resistant smartphones but what’s the use of a waterproof smartphone besides being able to take it for a swim and maybe for a bath? Sony has just launched a set of apps called Underwater Apps that will allow you to actually use the phone while being underwater.
There are 6 Underwater Apps namely Goldie, Photo Lab, Plantimal, Sink Sunk, Rainy-oke and Tiny Umbrella. First up, Goldie is actually a gold fish that lives underwater and if you lift your phone out, the fish will of course suffocate. Rainy-oke is a karaoke app that allows you to sing under the rain like you’ve always wanted to, Tiny Umbrella is, well, a tiny umbrella that tries to protect you from the rain and Sink-sunk turns your Xperia smartphone into a submarine. Check out the rest of the apps in the promotional videos below. These apps may not be very useful, but they definitely look like great apps to kill off some time and maybe impress some friends at a pool party.
These apps actually require you to place the phone underwater. Sony uses a detector that generates test tones and record sounds via the smartphone’s microphones. Spectrograms are then generated and the different values will help the phone detect if it’s actually underwater. Unfortunately, the Underwater Apps are only available for the Xperia Z1s and Xperia Z in the U.S. but it’s only be a matter of time before their APK gets released right?
