As you might have heard, TM today has launched its own 4G broadband service which is called TMgo in Alor Setar, Kedah. While we are still working to provide you plenty of details regarding the new service, we have managed to do a quick speed test using TMgo LTE USB dongle which is a D-Link DWM-221 as shown above.
To determine the speed during our test, we utilized the ever popular Ookla SpeedTest web platform and targets selected test servers in Malaysia as well as abroad.
Furthermore, our test session took place in two spots: first being the 13th floor of Holiday Villa in Alor Setar and second being at the ground floor of TMpoint Alor Setar which is located next to the hotel. In terms of coverage strength, both sites have a very strong signal according to the D-Link Connection Manager. So, here are the results:
Meanwhile, here are the actual image file of the test results as provided by Ookla:
Test Location: 13 Floor, Holiday Villa Alor Setar
Kuala Lumpur – Celcom Axiata | Kuala Lumpur – Yes 4G | Puchong – RedTone | Singapore – Singtel | Shanghai – China Mobile
Test Location: TMpoint Alor Setar
Session 1
Taipei – Far Eastone | London – Vodafone UK
Session 2
Cape Town – Telkom SA (SAIX) | Palo Alto – Fiber Internet Center | New York City – Atlantic Metro
Session 3
We did encounter a rather abnormal results when we choose Kuala Lumpur – Maxis as our test server though. As shown below, we managed to obtain the maximum speed of TMgo and we were not the only one who received the same results.
Nevertheless, our quick test here in Alor Setar showed that TMgo’s LTE speed is generally behind other telcos such as DiGi, U Mobile and Celcom. Then again, TM has stated early on that the theoretical maximum speed of TMgo LTE service which is served using 850Mhz spectrum is 20Mbps; far slower than telcos that utilized 1800 / 2600MHz spectrum who are able to theoretically go as fast as 42Mbps.
Meanwhile, do stay tuned as we still have more to talk about regarding TMgo prepaid LTE service.
