Electronic Arts continues to give away games that may seem a little odd to the regular user. The Origin On The House promotion started strong with Plants vs Zombies, an indie game that captured the imagination of casual gamers. The current free title is one that a large portion of our readers may have be too young to remember: Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger.
The Wing Commander series is fondly recalled by those who played it as being one of the finest space fighter simulators ever made. This third installment made a few changes to the regular formula used by the first two games. One of which was actually naming the protagonist, and then doing away with text for advancing the storyline in favour of live action cutscenes.
Mark Hamill of Star Wars and Batman fame stars as Colonel Christopher Blair, and is joined by other actors Malcolm McDowell and John Rhys-Davies (Gimli from The Lord of the Rings). It might be one of the most star studded casts of any video game ever made, and is worth looking into just for the rare opportunity to see Hamill appearing as someone who isn’t Luke Skywalker.
Admittedly, this is a very, very old game. Saying that it lacks HD graphics may be a complete understatement. On that note, it is still free; and is an important part of our gaming history. Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger can be downloaded through EA’s Origin Client. The promotion ends 3 September 2014.
