Xiaomi Kicks LG Off the Chart and is Now the World’s Fifth Largest Smartphone Vendor in Q2 2014

Xiaomi Fifth Largest Phone Manufacturer Q2 2014

Yesterday, the latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report from IDC showed that Chinese phone manufacturers are on the rise while the more popular ones like Samsung and Apple are falling. Today, Strategy Analytics releases something similar but further demonstrates how strong Chinese phone makers are as Xiaomi kicks LG off the top 5 chart, taking its place as the fifth largest smartphone vendor in Q2 2014.

According to Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 27% year on year from 233million units in Q2 2013 to 295.2 million in Q2 2014 and like the one from IDC, it shows that the ones that were hit the hardest were Samsung and Apple. While LG did pretty well, Xiaomi’s amazing performance, and perhaps thanks to its international rollout over the past few months, managed to overtake the Korean company to take the #5 spot of the Global Smartphone Vendor Shipments and Market Share in Q2 2014.

Xiaomi’s shipments jumped from a mere 4.1 million units in Q2 2013 to a whopping 15.1 million units in Q2 2014. As for market share, they went from 1.8% to 5.1% while LG dropped from 5.2% to 4.9%, placing them in the sixth position.

Strategy Analytics Q2 2014

“Xiaomi was the star performer in the quarter, capturing a record 5 percent marketshare and rising into fifth place in the global smartphone rankings for the first time ever. Xiaomi’s Android smartphone models are wildly popular in the Chinese market and it shifts millions of them every quarter through its extensive online and operator channels. Xiaomi’s next step is to target the international market in Asia and Europe, where it will have to invest big money to familiarize western consumers with its unfamiliar brand name. LG held sixth place for 5 percent global smartphone share and a record 14.5 million units shipped. LG is performing relatively well in the United States and Europe, but it continues to lag in the huge China and India markets.” – Wendy Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics.

As for the rest of the players in the top 5 list, everything is pretty much the same as what we saw in IDC’s report yesterday with both Huawei and Lenovo doing very well. For comparison’s sake, here are both reports placed side by side:

Who else is excited as me to see the next quarter’s report or maybe the report after Xiaomi launches its Mi 4 internationally?
