Classic first person shooter Doom appears to be the default go-to game for hackers who want to make traditionally boring machines interesting. The latest device to join the Doom-capable club happens to be an automatic teller machine in Australia. Controls are done using the standard ATM keypad, although the two Aussies behind the project intend to get the buttons on the sides of the display to function as weapons selectors.
Some will point out that this feat is very possible as most ATMs these days still run on a customised version of Windows XP. Of course, it still required installing a new software to get the machine to run the game; and altering the keypad to accept inputs that do not involve checking ones abysmal bank balance.
The most impressive bit of information to come out of the video happens to be that ATMs have built in stereo speakers. It’s a little puzzling as to why this was considered necessary for a money dispenser, but perhaps the engineers figured that someone would want to play Doom on it one day.
