It has been a week after Electronic Arts announced that support for The Sims 2 would be ending, and most owners of the game have already been upgraded to the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection. As a parting gift, EA is now providing a free download code for those who don’t already own the game.
All users have to do is log into their Origin accounts and redeem the ‘I-LOVE-THE-SIMS’ promotional code. This is the only way to get the game off Origin as it appears to have already been removed from the products page. The code will only last until the end of July, so there isn’t much time left for those who want to indulge in a classic game of meddling with the lives of virtual beings.
Thankfully, the Origin servers will still retain the game for download. So while new copies will not be sold, existing owners will still be able to access their purchase after the end of the promotional period.
Support for the venerable game is ending as EA prepares to launch the next installment in The Sims series. The Sims 4 promises a large amount of updates and new features, although rumours of a subscription based premium account being included in the game have been turning off a number of fans. The new title is set to launch 2 September, and pre-orders for the digital deluxe version are already plastered all over Origin.
