Update: The new pay-per-use mobile internet also comes with a “safety net” for accidental usage. Find out more after the break
Hate telco bill shocks because you forgot to turn off your data and you’re not subscribed to a data plan? Maxis has just announced a “Worry-Free Surfing Promise”. You can surf the internet with no worries at all because you’ll never get charged for over RM50 for all your pay-per-use mobile internet.
The program will start from 14 July 2014. How it works is that users will be charged using block rates at RM10 for 50MB. The maximum you’ll get charged at is 5 blocks – that’s RM50/month for 250MB of data. You can still surf the internet after that at no charge at all, but your speed will be throttled.
According to Maxis, this new pay-per-use mobile internet rate is up to 98% cheaper than other operators, and the maximum rate of RM50/month is 5 times lower than other local operators.
Before you proceed to start surfing on your mobile phone, do note that it will only take place after 14 July 2014. Currently, pay-per-use mobile internet is charged based on 10sen/10kb. To check your data usage, just dial *100*7# on your phone, or *136*9# and select <check status>. Your quota will be refreshed at your next bill cycle.
There is also a “safety net” for accidental usage of 250kB. This means that if the user accidentally turns on mobile data on their phone and manage to shut it off on time (usage of 250kB and below), Maxis will not charge for that.
“Based on our findings, more than 1 in 2 postpaid users are not on any data plan. This means that they are exposed to extremely high PPU charges of about 10 sen per 10kB. To put things into perspective, an average music track is about 5MB and will cost about RM50 to stream using PPU charges by other operators. With our new PPU rates, it costs just RM10 per 50MB of usage, which is 98% lower.” – Dushyan Vaithiyanathan, Maxis’ Head of Consumer Business.
