Gearbox software is mostly famed for bringing a fresh perspective to the first person shooter genre in Borderlands, and it is now bringing what it learnt in changing things up to the MOBA genre. The biggest change in this case would be abandoning the top down isometric view for a first person experience. Calling it Battleborn, the new game promises both PvP and PvE gameplay while retaining elements familiar to those who play Dota 2 or League of Legends.
Details are sketchy, but the teaser trailer includes the traditional Elven archer archetype joining forces with what appears to be a clockwork gentleman, a sword summoning magical girl, and some sort of space marine with a minigun. The blending of concepts and character designs is not entirely unexpected as Gearbox has been known to merge multiple styles to create their games. What little else is known about the game is that there is a levelling system and players will fight in arenas that are swarming with robotic NPC minions who function like those of any other MOBA.
It is hard to be excited about this game without gameplay videos, although it is good to see a studio work on a new IP every once in a while. With any luck, this game will contain the character and humour that made Borderlands 2 a joy to play; and maybe allow us to forget about Aliens: Colonial Marines.
