Yahoo’s push for more online content has taken an interesting turn as the online giant has announced that it will be picking up popular TV show Community. The cult hit was recently cancelled by parent company NBC, although that was not the first time the show has been dropped by a studio. With 13 episodes scheduled to be airing later this year, Yahoo may have found their big headliner show to draw in viewers.
Video streaming efforts from Yahoo have been low key over the past few months, despite the amount of new being reported of a massive effort to rival the likes of Youtube and Hulu. Two new original series were announced earlier, although those shows are still in the planning stage and will not be ready until early next year. The company was also apparently attempting to poach Youtube stars by offering them a better deal on advertising money.
With nothing else coming from their efforts, Community may be the move that they need to get the video content going. Although considering the cult status of the show, it might not bring in the numbers and hype that Yahoo needs to play with the big boys.
