Telekom Malaysia has launched its own communications app for Android and iOS. Called HyppMe, the app allows the regular instant messaging functions while throwing in some extra features that are relatively uncommon. The instant messaging space is growing more crowded, and it will be interesting to see if TM will be able to pry users away from the competition.
Commenting on the launch, Emily Wee, Vice President of Business and Media Operations, New Media said: “Connectivity is no more a luxury, it’s a necessity. In today’s dynamic world that is constantly evolving, while everyone wants to stay connected to work, family and friends, HyppMe fulfils these needs to communicate with creativity, entertainment, flexibility and convenience, all in one application.”
Unlike other instant messaging services that allow VOIP calls between users of the same app, HyppMe takes advantage of TM’s massive communications network to also allow voice calls to fixed lines and other local telcos. Calls to other HyppMe apps and fixed lines are completely free, although the user will need an active data connection; which, incidentally TM does not provide. Calls to other telcos will be charged 8 sen/minute, and is a reasonably competitive rate.
It should be noted that to do this, the HyppMe app service also functions as a prepaid service, and must be topped up with credit to make calls. Thankfully, the app allows credit to be bought from within the app itself.
