Since McDonald’s is the official restaurant of 2014 FIFA World Cup, the football fever is running high over at McDonald’s Malaysia. Apart from having World Cup-themed meals (obviously), the fast food giant is also screening all of 64’s World Cup matches live in HD at its 24-hours outlets throughout the country.
In addition to that, McDonald’s also has its own World Cup-themed app called McDonald’s GOL! which is basically an Qualcomm Vuforia-based augmented reality (AR) app that allows users to interact with the company’s World Cup-themed french fries containers or also known as the fry boxes.
As you can see above, the graphics on World Cup Fry Boxes are different from the standard McDonald’s fry boxes. The graphics which is available in 12 different artwork made by artists from all over the world is the key for the McDonald’s GOL! app whereby once it is scanned, the app will then “convert” the surrounding into a football pitch.
In this AR pitch, the fry box will become a goal while at the same time, the app will also include a number of obstacle depending on the difficulty level that is set by users. In certain stages, these obstacles are derived from actual real life object that users put into the environment. To score a goal, all one has to do is just “flick” the virtual ball around these obstacles into the goal.

The score will then be submitted anonymously to a global ranking while at the same time, users will also able to unlock various types of awards according to their achievements in the game. Users will also able to share the replay of their goals through Facebook and Twitter. Unfortunately, this game is made for fun and a tribute to the spirit of FIFA World Cup; so there is no prize for the top ranking players.
Apart from the main AR game, the McDonald’s GOL! app also includes additional section that features real life trick-shot videos and curated list of the best trick-shot from McDonald’s GOL! players. Do note that one still can enjoy the app without the World Cup fry box by using this play card that McDonald’s has also provided at the app’s official website.
The McDonald’s GOL! app is readily available for free through Google Play for Android devices and Apple iOS App Store.
