Anyone who has ever wanted to create new levels for Mario will soon have the chance to indulge in their creative side. Nintendo has announced Mario Maker, a level editor for Mario on the Wii U. It would appear that the console maker is finally getting around to making their unusual controller useful.
Mario Maker can be switched between the traditional 8-bit Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros, which mostly provides graphical differences. Nintendo demonstrated how the level editor works using the stylus on the Wii U controller to build new and unusual challenges for Mario. Players are given the option to place objects in Mario’s path to build the level, and it is unknown whether there will be the option for making hidden areas or special events.
This may not be the game that will sell Wii Us, but it is a nice touch to the rather stale Mario franchise. Of course, it could only work if players are allowed to upload their creations for others to enjoy.
Mario Maker is scheduled to be released in early 2015.
