After using Objective-C as lingua franca for about 20 years, Apple have decided that they would take the “C” out of “Objective-C” and have come up with a brand new language focused on speed and efficiency aptly called Swift. Flexible enough to craft apps from 3D intensive games right down to the simplest of Social Media Apps, programs crafted with Swift should run smoother and faster than with Objective-C. It’s not all going to be tossed aside in favour of Swift however as Swift code can live alongside Objective-C and C in a single application.
I did most of my final year project in Objective-C so this is quite close to my heart. If you’re raring to get a glimpse of the language, here’s a free e-book Apple’s just released. If you’re a dev and want to get coding go download the XCode 6 Beta and get started!
