Crytek’s CryEngine is now available to everyone through Steam. The company has been moving to make the development engine more accessible to the public, and had earlier released a version for independent studios for a subscription fee of US$9.90 a month.
The CryEngine has been used to build the graphically intensive Crysis series; which is generally used to stress test graphics cards. The Steam release comes with three subscription plans: US$9.90 (RM32) for one month, US$9/month (RM29/month) for three months, and US$8.33/month (RM27/month) for six months. Each subscription is billed monthly, and provides the full suite of tools available to the CryEngine platform.
More importantly for developers, Crytek is not charging royalties for titles made with the CryEngine; meaning that sold products will not have to be concerned with paying extra fees. CryEngine is only available for Windows.
