The much anticipated release of Watch Dogs ran into some unexpected problems on the PC. Players who attempted to log into the game through Uplay experienced server errors and were left sitting around wondering if they would be able to play the game. The issue appears to be extremely widespread as this 35 page thread in the Steam Community shows.
Ubisoft’s Twitter feed has been on tech support duty for the last 16 hours as customers complained about the inability to log into Uplay or even register their game code. Early reports indicate that the number of players signing in to play Watch Dogs ended up overwhelming the Uplay servers and causing them to slow down to the point of being useless.
One fix for the issue appears to be to run the game in offline mode, although that means excluding a large portion of the promised multiplayer experience. Players have been voicing their dissatisfaction with the services provided by Uplay, especially as Ubisoft games are already mostly bought on Steam; making the extra service redundant.
