League of Legends is arguably tied with Dota 2 for the most popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena type game. It also features a robust professional league for the top players to compete in. However, the Daily Dot has examined the League Championship Series and discovered an interesting statistic: the blue team wins more often than the red team.
The online news portal examined 224 games played during the recent League Championship Series, which revealed that the blue team won 34 more games than the red team (a full 15 percent higher win ratio). Digging further into the statistics it was discovered that over the series the red team had a tendencies to go for Dragons first, a strategy that lent to a larger boost in starting gold; yet the blue teams chose to focus on taking down defensive towers first. Players on the blue team also had more kills and assists than their red counterparts, a statistic that was highly unusual considering the symmetrical nature of the games.
While the Daily Dot did not comment on why this difference in win/loss ratios exists in a game that is theoretically balanced, it may affect any upcoming leagues and how the teams plan their future strategies. As eSports gains a wider audience, we may be seeing more of these kinds of analysis in the future. After all, all sports fans love their statistics.
