Google Maps has received a substantial update which now integrates ridesharing service Uber. The update now allows users to compare Uber transportation with the previous options for walking and driving. Choosing the Uber option also automatically opens the Uber app and prompts the user to hire a ride. Provided the Uber app is installed in the first place.
Analysts suggest that Google’s partnership with Uber as another step forward towards its ultimate goal of driverless cars and the concept of sharing vehicles. The internet giant has made the driverless taxis one of its moonshot goals, and partnership with Uber could be a stepping stone in that direction.
While Uber will benefit from the additional exposure and press from being associated with Google, it will also end up providing plenty of information about transportation patterns and how people use taxi services. Which could ultimately affect where and how Google decides to deploy its future plans.
Other new features also include the option to save maps for offline use, save locations for future reference, and more complete public transportation information. The new Google Maps can be downloaded for Android and iOS.
