A prequel to Borderlands 2 is rumoured to be in the works for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The game appears to be set in between the events of Borderlands and Borderlands 2. While 2K Games has denied working on a new Borderlands game, the statement appears to not extend to 2K Australia – who published games like Bioshock and X-COM.
GamePointsNow.com broke the news about the new game and setting. The “sequel” will take place on a moon and Hyperion’s giant H-shaped space station. As this game takes place off planet, players will have to contend with low gravity and limited oxygen. Jetpacks will allow characters to hop around on the surface of the moon, while oxygen can be collected as loot.
Four new playable characters will be available for this game: Athena The Gladiator, Wilhelm The Enforcer, Nisha The Lawbringer and Fragtrap, a militarised claptrap. Fans of Borderlands 2 will recognise Wilhelm as the giant Loader-boss who tries to kill them. A younger version of primary antagonist Handsome Jack also returns, yet again trying to obtain another alien artifact.
There is no information about a release for the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, which is rather odd for a game due out at this time of year. Developer Gearbox has a panel at the upcoming PAX East this weekend, so expect more news by then.
