Google may have sold Motorola to Lenovo but it doesn’t mean that the company will stop making phones. On top of keeping Project Ara, the modular phone concept that everyone wants, Google is also working on another project called the Project Tango, a 5” Android smartphone prototype that is equipped with customized hardware and software that allows users to create a 3D map of their surroundings.
Why would anyone want to create a 3D map? Imagine if you wish to refurnish your house, you can easily use Project Tango to create a 3D map of your house – just move around with Project Tango and the phone will automatically capture over a quarter million 3D measurements every second and combining all the data into a single 3D model space around you. On top of that, according to Google, the 3D mapping capability could also be used to help create more realistic augmented reality games, to assist the visually impaired navigate around, and a whole lot more.
Project Tango is still in its very early stage for now, Google is currently looking for professional developers to help them put the technology to great use so if you are a passionate developer who dreams of creating more than just a touchscreen app, visit Google’s Project Tango page to sign up now. Google has 200 prototype dev kits and you might be lucky enough to be one of the developers.
