After 14 years in business, the CEO of World Cyber Games yesterday has announced through an internal e-mail to its partners that the organization will not organized any events or tournaments from this year onwards. The news shocks e-Sports fans throughout the world considering that WCG is one of the pioneer in the competitive gaming world and has act as a stepping stone for many professional gamers out there since its inception in 2000.
In the wake of the news, we reached out to PIKOM who is the national organizer for WCG Malaysian Championship for the past few years. Here is their response:
From PIKOM’s end, we just heard about the news regarding WCG. It is very unfortunate to hear about the challenges faced by the organizer of International World Cyber Games which has led to cancellation of all tournaments for this year. At PIKOM, no agreement has been signed with World Cyber Games Inc. as we are still finalizing our 2014 activities. We will issue an announcement early March to inform the public on our major events for 2014.
Technically, PIKOM should be able to organize its own WCG-branded tournament since yesterday’s email stated that national partners are allowed to use the WCG brand to organize their own local event. However, since the response from PIKOM above didn’t provide much details, guess we will only able to find out if WCG or any sort of gaming event is part of PIKOM’s plan for this year once the organization revealed its 2014 event calendar next month.
