3DS users will be familiar with the problem of region locked games. The idea that certain games don’t work in different parts of the country is a very outdated idea in the age of the global society. Since Nintendo appears to be sticking to their guns on this issue, some enterprising users have taken it upon themselves to fix the problem.
The region lock workaround isn’t meant for piracy purposes either, as it does not allow the console to play ROMs. Instead, it only runs on official cartridges; which means people will still have to buy the games to play them.
Some amount of technical knowledge is required to implement the patch as it gets complicated. You will essentially need a 3DS Flashcard plus access to a method to modify the launcher. The GBATemp community has helpfully listed out the steps and files that are required; although most will not be able to understand what is going on without some background in hacking 3DS firmware.
Currently, both WiiU and 3DS games are region locked; including those only available through digital download through the online store.
