Samsung has big plans for its sixth iteration of the Galaxy S flagship, which has been codenamed Project Zero. As Samsung plans to build the Galaxy S6 from the ground up, Project Zero may be the fresh breath of air Samsung needs.
The Project Zero codename is indicative of the company’s fresh start with the Galaxy S6’s development. Previously, Samsung’s codenames for its phones have been rather generic: Project T for the Note 4 and Project K for the S5. The company is said to be developing its 2015 flagship “from scratch”, which will likely mean a new design language blended with Samsung’s trademark high-end hardware. SamMobile, who has been very reliable with its leaks, have released what is an early set of hardware specifications of the Galaxy S6.
The Galaxy S6 is said to be powered by Samsung’s brand new Exynos 7420, a 64-bit chip with four Cortex-A53 and four Cortex-A57 cores. However, a Qualcomm variant would still be available in the form of the Snapdragon 810, the first 64-bit processor in Qualcomm’s line of Snapdragon processors. Storage wise, the Galaxy S6 would come in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB options, with 3GB of RAM. The Galaxy S6’s display is said to pack a 2K (2560 x 1440) resolution, though the screen size has not yet been confirmed at this stage in development.
The rear camera is said to be the same sensor used in the Galaxy Note 4, a 16 megapixel shooter that is quite the performer in our review. Samsung is said to be still deciding between a 16MP or 20MP sensor for the camera, though it’ll most likely be a 16 megapixel shooter. As for the front camera, it would be a 5MP shooter. Other specifications include the use of Broadcom’s new BCM4773 chip, which combines features such as GPS and other sensors into a single chip, resulting in lower power consumption.
High hopes are placed on Samsung for the Project Zero. Samsung has been in a financial slump for several quarters in a row now, and if it wants to be the industry leader again, Samsung definitely has to get this right. The Galaxy S6 could be the flagship that puts Samsung back in the race against other competitors such as Apple and Xiaomi, to name a few.
