It looks like one email app is not enough for someone as big as Google, the company has recently introduced a whole new email app called “Inbox” that is made by the same people who made Gmail, but it’s not Gmail. Confused? So are we.
From what we can see, Inbox is basically a smarter email that features a brand new interface, and has a bunch of features built inside. Remember “categories” in Gmail app and on the web? Inbox has a similar feature called “bundles” that automatically groups together similar types of emails and if the app isn’t accurate enough, you can even teach it to adapt to the way you work by choosing which emails to group together.
There is also a “highlights” feature that highlights important messages like flight itineraries, event information and such so you don’t miss them. Together with “bundles”, you can see all the information you want at just a glance. Other features include “reminders, assist, and snooze” that makes it easier to for you to manage your stuffs. Set a Reminder for yourself and Assist will help you get the vital information you need. According to Google, if you write a Reminder to call the hardware store, Assist will get the store’s number for you along with its operational hours. Similarly, if you make a restaurant reservation online, Assist will add a map to your confirmation email, book a flight and Inbox gives a link to check-in.
Google Inbox is available for Android devices, iOS devices and even as a web-app (limited to Chrome only) but sadly, it’s not available for everybody just yet. Inbox will be an invite-only thing for now – Google has already sent out the first round of invitations to give Inbox a try. If you’re too impatient and can’t wait to get your hands on Inbox, find someone who has the invitation and if you can’t do so, you can try emailing the Mountain View company at inbox@google.com to get an invitation as soon as more becomes available.
What do you think of Inbox? Do we really need a new email client?
