Apple has finally announced the refresh of the Mac mini at its most recent event. Unlike the iMac with its “5K” display, the improvements aren’t as flashy, but are instead expected adjustments to the popular compact computer system. The processors have been updated to the current generation of Intel “Haswell” chips, along with the new Intel HD Graphics 5000 and Intel Iris integrated graphics options.
The new Mac minis begin with a dual-core Intel Core i5 processor running at 1.4GHz and goes all the way up to a 3.0 GHz Core i7. Alongside the fourth generation processors are the new versions of Intel’s integrated graphics. The lowest cost variant begins with the Intel HD 5000, and this can be bumped up to the Intel Iris graphics. This represents a substantial jump in terms of graphical power over the previous generation Mac mini; especially considering that the revised pricing also makes it cheaper.
A pair of Thunderbolt 2 ports also make an appearance on the new Mac mini, which is not surprising as the standard is pretty much Apple’s calling card on computers by now. It is also arguably much faster than the ubiquitous USB connector; although the Mac mini also sports four USB 3.0 ports.
As expected, the Mac mini will now ship with OS X Yosemite; which is also available for free from Apple for those who are interested in upgrading their current computers.
Prices have also been revised, with the Mac mini starting at RM1,599. Potential customers can already begin ordering the Mac mini from Apple’s online store.
