Steam will soon be converting all pricing to Ringgit for Malaysian users. This means no more checking exchange rates when buying games. It also means that any leftover currency in the Steam Wallet will be converted into RM when the change happens; whether this is a good or bad thing is a matter of the exchange rate at the time. The pricing change is scheduled to happen next week on 16 September – which coincidentally is also Malaysia Day.
Valve has been planning to allow users to make purchases on Steam using local currencies since the beginning of the year, and Malaysia is only one of the 12 countries that make up the list. News of the change arrived late last night in the form of an email from the Steam support team, and it appears that Singapore will also be allowed to use the Singapore Dollar for purchases at the same time.
There is no news about how the currency change will affect pricing, as some Steam users have reported games being cheaper in regions that have been switched to local currencies. It could be that Valve will follow the pricing of local vendors when possible, although it is still too early to say how this will change. Oddly enough, the Steam Blog makes no mention of the currency change.
