Update: The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is scheduled for end of October and yes, Malaysia will be among the first countries to receive it.
Here’s the device that Huawei has been teasing about – say hello to the new Huawei Ascend Mate 7, a brand new octa-core phablet from the Chinese company. As teased, it comes with a fingerprint sensor and a design that’s rather reminiscent of HTC’s One Max.
At a glance, the Ascend Mate 7 looks very much like the HTC One Max, featuring an aluminium body wrapping around a large 6” display at the front, and a fingerprint sensor right below the rear camera. However, unlike the fingerprint reader on the One Max, which requires you to swipe your finger on it, the one on this Mate 7 works very much like the one found on the iPhone 5s – just place your finger on it for it to work its magic. Huawei says the fingerprint reader can recognise up to five fingers.
On the specs department, the Ascend Mate 7 features a large 6” 1080p display, with an overall dimension measuring at 157 x 81 x 7.9mm. It has a pretty solid body that consists of matte aluminium alloy, which explains its pretty heavy weight of 185grams. On the inside, the Ascend Mate 7 is powered by the company’s very own Kirin 925 octa-core processor (four 1.8GHz A15 and four 1.3GHz A7), with 2GB or 3GB of RAM and Mali T628 GPU.
The Ascend Mate 7 also offers support for LTE Cat 6, and has a security engine trust zone to store encrypted fingerprint data. As for the camera, the Mate 7 comes with a 13MP rear camera with Sony’s fourth-generation BSI sensor and f/2.0 aperture, along with a 5MP front shooter. Other specs include Android 4.4 with Huawei’s EMUI 3.0, a generous 4100mAh battery, and an expandable storage of up to 32GB (16GB for the 2GB model and 32GB for the 3GB model).
Sounds good? Well, the price might throw you off a bit, scheduled to arrive in Europe, Hong Kong and China sometime this quarter, the cheaper variant is priced at €499 while the more expensive one has a price of €599 – that’s RM2,100 and RM2,500 respectively; then again, European prices are usually higher than those in the Asian markets.
