Released in 2012, Windows 8 is barely two years old but it is widely known that Microsoft is already working on the next iteration of the operating system. Codenamed “Threshold” and referred by many as Windows 9, the new operating system is expected to be released to consumers sometime in 2015 according to early information but it seems like that we might be able to see it in action very soon.
Citing sources that claimed to be familiar with Microsoft’s plans, Tom Warren of The Verge has stated that Windows 9 will make its first public appearance through a press event on 30 September. There is also a possibility that Microsoft might be discussing the much rumoured merging of Windows RT and Windows Phone at the same event.
Additionally, the technical preview version of Windows 9 might be released to developers and enthusiasts on the same day or shortly after. This preview version of Windows 9 is expected to feature the new Start menu that is similar to the one Microsoft showed at Build 2014. However, it is not known at the moment if the preview will carry Cortana digital personal assistant which was adapted from Windows Phone 8.1.
Apart from that, the Charms bar that was introduced in Windows 8 will be missing from this preview version of Windows 9. Well then, let’s see how true this particular info will be once we get closer to 30 September.
