LG has just taken the wraps off its latest teaser video, featuring what appears to be a circular smartwatch. And in this short teaser, LG has managed to take a dig at the other rounded smartwatch, the Motorola Moto 360 too.
Right off the start of the video, an introduction of a new “R” moniker suggest the name of the new smartwatch – LG G Watch R, which we’re assuming is an abbreviation for “Round”. Perhaps LG wasn’t really that psyched about the LG G Watch that was announced at Google I/O 2014 either. It seems as though the LG G Watch R has been in development all this time while early adopters of LG’s square Android Wear device fished out bugs and and unwanted quirks — remember the charging pin corrosion problem on the LG G Watch? Of course, that claim is purely speculation, but it isn’t hard to reach that conclusion given the short time frame between the two launches.

In the video, LG also takes a dig at the Moto 360’s odd-looking black panel at the bottom of the screen, with its “feel the gap” (they must have been too excited to notice the difference between “fill” and “feel”), while claiming that the G Watch R’s screen will be a “perfect circle”. To do this, LG will somehow station the display drivers of the smartwatch behind the rounded screen. On top of that, unlike the LG G Watch, the new watch will feature a physical button on the side, which completes a classical rounded timepiece look.
The teaser also flashed several watch faces and with a quick glimpse, you will see a compass interface, and also a step counter. For all we know, LG could even include a heart rate monitor which is found in the Samsung Gear Live, meaning that LG’s next smartwatch effort could turn out to be the best-looking and most feature-packed yet.
As indicated in the teaser, the LG G Watch R will be unveiled in IFA 2014 which is happening in less than two weeks in Berlin. Also happening next month is Motorola’s release of the Moto 360 in its own event in Chicago. With that, the month of September this year would probably mark the birth of the rounded smartwatch for consumers.
