Given that the new Samsung Galaxy S5 sports IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, some might question if the rumours of a Galaxy S5 Active will come true. But lo and behold, the Galaxy S5 was indeed in the works, and is now available in the US.
Sporting a rugged body that looks like a Galaxy S5 encased in an Otterbox casing, the Galaxy S5 Active retains the same hardware as its non-rugged flagship, with a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 5.1-inch Full HD display and 16MP rear camera with fingerprint sensor at the back. The rugged exterior itself is also rated IP67, but which also passes Mil-Spec 810G ratings for water-resistance, shock resistance and to withstand dust, vibration, temperature extremes, humidity, and high altitude.
The only other difference with the S5 Active is the addition of a “convenience key” at the side of the device, which opens access to the phone’s suite of outdoor activity-related apps. On the other hand, Samsung has also embraced the S5 Active’s rugged exterior by offering the device in “Camo Green”, “Titanium Grey” and…”Ruby Red”.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is now available in the US only to AT&T for $199.90 on a two-year contract. Availability for other countries is not confirmed, though it is likely.
