Well, that was fairly unexpected. Xiaomi Malaysia‘s first batch of sales sold like hot cakes, grinding their servers to a halt in the process. What’s surprising though was not how quickly they sold out – that was a given – but instead which product sold out first. The Mi Power Bank sold out in almost half the time it took for the Mi 3 to sell out.
Cue the flipping of virtual tables.
In what some has labelled “Perang Beli Powerbank“, it appears many, many Malaysian customers were more interested in buying the Mi Power Bank – a high-quality 10,400mAh power bank retailing at only RM36 – than with the company’s flagship smartphone, the Mi 3. This was also in spite of the fact that Xiaomi also added in a bundle for the Mi 3, offering a screen protector and protective flip case together with the device at RM925 – a further RM10 discount, alongside the standard RM889 Mi 3.
Based on our experience (almost everyone here at HQ was frantically refreshing the page and screaming in agony) all 5000 units of the Mi Power Bank sold out in less than 9 minutes, while the Mi 3 continued to be available until just before 12.20pm, where all 4000 units were finally sold out. We’ll update the post with some official numbers from Xiaomi Malaysia when it is revealed soon.
And, given the intense interest in the Mi Power Bank, there were bound to be many disappointed consumers. Already, Xiaomi Malaysia’s Facebook page (as well as ours) are playing host to plenty of angry comments about how this was all a scam and many other baseless claims.
In any case, Xiaomi Malaysia will be bringing in more units in the coming weeks, so all hope is not yet lost.
