Graphene is considered to be the Holy Grail of metamaterials. A single paper thin sheet is three hundred times stronger than steel and one hundred times more conductive than silicon. The only hurdle science has met with his synthetic material is the extremely high costs involved with manufacturing it. Samsung’s Advanced Institute of Technology is now claiming to have found a way to accelerate the commercialisation of graphene.
The press release explains that Samsung, in collaboration with Sungkyungkwan University’s School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering, has discovered an alternative method for crystalising graphene in a way that it retains its electrical and mechanical properties.
Ideally, this means that the Korean manufacturer will be able to create devices that are not only flexible, but are also practically indestructible. Although it is hard to say when this breakthrough will result in consumer devices.
