The self-styled “2014 flagship killer“, the OnePlus One, has faced some intense criticism shortly after it was launched. Not because the One under-delivered on its hype, but rather the company’s way of mitigating supply issues of the One by placing an invite-only system to purchase it. It’s caused a lot of confusion, leading to some very irate people who clearly want to buy the phone.
Good news: while the invite system will still be around, OnePlus has promised that it will soon be much easier to procure a OnePlus One.
In a forum post, OnePlus shared its production schedule for the second quarter of 2014. One of the very first things contained in the forum post was an admission that they simply were not ready for such intense interest in its smartphone. Forum administrator Carl wrote:
However, after our product announcement, we realized that far more people wanted the One than what we originally anticipated.
As a result, the company is now “frantically adjusting” its production schedule to meet the exponentially greater-than-anticipated demand. The updated production schedule would now be able to cater for the first batch of invites for both the Silk White and Sandstone Black models by mid-May to early June, while “increased general availability” will come later in June – which could mean that the company might expand the device’s availability to other countries. The company also mentioned that there are already 100 units ready for winners of the “Smash the Past” contest.
However, the invite system will still be in place, but OnePlus claims that it will be much easier to get an invite in June, once its revamped production schedule is in full swing.
