After an unbelievable amount of information was leaked out, HTC has finally made its latest flagship smartphone, the HTC One (M8), official. Unsurprisingly, it is just as the many, many rumours have indicated. But how does it stack up when placed in a spec-for-spec comparison? Let’s find out.
The new HTC One (M8) shares more than just its predecessor’s name, with only the codename appended at the back providing a difference. The entire look and feel of the new HTC One is pretty much the same as HTC’s 2013 flagship, too. But beyond that lies a device that has been very much upgraded. HTC has learned from its mistakes with the 2013 One, and the comparison table below speaks volumes:
As can be seen, the new HTC One sports the most powerful processor currently available, support for the largest microSD cards, a fast-charging battery, and plenty more. The new HTC One (M8) is definitely a major step up from its predecessor in every aspect possible.
But what about the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Sony Xperia Z2 or even the LG G Pro 2? These flagship smartphones were the highlights of the recent Mobile World Congress 2014, so how do they compare against the struggling Taiwanese company’s latest effort at wrestling some market share for themselves?
Here’s how the HTC One (M8) compare against the Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2, LG G Pro 2 as well as the new Oppo Find 7 and Find 7a. Note that the better-specced option has been bolded:
Finally, a HTC flagship is on the same level as its rivals. On paper, the HTC One sports the same powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset found on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Oppo Find 7, with the same amount of RAM as its fierce Korean rival. It’s got the edge over the S5 with its large 5MP wide-angle front-facing camera, but the main point of contention, once again, will be in the rear cameras’ capabilities. Is UltraPixel better than mere megapixel?
Ultimately, the new HTC One (M8) is everything we asked for from a flagship Android smartphone from HTC: powerful hardware, amazing build quality, and interesting software features. But that’s also what its rivals are offering with their flagship devices. Could HTC turn a tide with the new One?
We’re about to find out very soon.
