If you read our report on the brand new Razer Blade gaming notebooks yesterday, you might have noticed that both 2014 Blade and Blade Pro are equipped with the GeForce GTX 800M GPUs from NVIDIA. Both of them – GTX 870M and GTX 860M – are just two of the latest GPUs that came from brand new NVIDIA GeForce 800M series which was also officially revealed to the world yesterday.
As opposed to previous generation of GeForce mobile GPU series, NVIDIA decided to reveal all the GPU model within the new GeForce 800M series from top to the bottom in one shot. For the new GeForce 800M series, NVIDIA has also decided to drop the GT moniker from the name of mainstream (a.k.a budget) models under the new GPU family such 840M, 830M and 820M.
Here are the lists of GeForce 800M’s basic specs:
Apart from the specifications above which offer up to 60-percent more performance than previous GeForce mobile GPUs, what are other new features that NVIDIA has equipped into GeForce 800M GPU series? Well, one of them is called Battery Boost which apparently able to extend game time on a laptop that is running on battery up to twice the normal period.
NVIDIA didn’t explain in detail on how Battery Boost functions but in general, this automated feature provides a balance between smooth gameplay (at least 30fps) and battery life for users. That being said, users still able to set their priority between having longer battery life or better graphics quality GeForce Experience (GFE) software.
The NVIDIA Battery Boost feature also work hand-in-hand with the existing NVIDIA Optimus GPU switcher technology which dynamically switch from integrated GPU within the laptops CPU (such as the Intel HD Graphics) to NVIDIA GeForce GPU when the need arises. Not enough with, the GeForce 800M GPU series also mark the debut for NVIDIA’s ShadowPlay built-in game recorder and GameStream technology on notebooks.
However, Battery Boost, ShadowPlay and GameStream features are limited to the GTX-class GPU in the family. Nevertheless, the non-GTX member of GeForce 800M will still support other NVIDIA’s technologies such as GFE, GPU Boost 2.0, Optimus and Physx as per their GTX-class siblings.
Apart from Razer Blade and Blade Pro, other products that have been equipped with the new GeForce 800M series also include Dell Alienware 17, Gigabyte P35R, Lenovo Y50, MSI GS 60, MSI GS 70, Asus G750JZ, MSI GT 70, and MSI GT 60. Expect the list to expand very soon once manufacturers equip the GeForce 800M GPUs to more products.
