Smartphones running on Ubuntu will finally be available this year. Canonical has today announced partnerships with Spanish smartphone maker bq Readers and Chinese company Meizu to develop Ubuntu smartphones globally. The company also revealed that the Ubuntu smartphone that will be launched this year will be aimed at the mid to high-end market.
As of several alternative mobile operating systems, Ubuntu faces quite a challenge in moving into the mainstream mobile market. Having been announced close to two years ago, Canonical has not yet been able to deliver its own hardware running on Ubuntu, instead providing images to flash on Google’s Nexus devices. They did attempt a highly ambitious Indiegogo campaign to fund the Ubuntu Edge, but failed to meet its $32m target.
For now, Canonical did not share more about its plans on where the Ubuntu devices will be available. But with MWC 2014 just around the corner, we may soon find out and who knows, probably even take a peek at the new Ubuntu devices?
