News has been leaking out of Mobile World Congress 2014 about a Google smartwatch is currently in the works; with Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 manufacturer, LG, colloborating on the device. There is no official word on the matter; however, the Wall Street Journal reportedly discovered the situation from a person familiar with the situation.
CNET has also been reporting on the smartwatch, which is apparently set to be unveiled at Google I/O in June. Details are still sketchy, but it would appear that this particular watch will fall under the Nexus brand. Which shouldn’t be too surprising considering LG’s success with letting Google take centre stage with the marketing. Interestingly, the operating system for the smartwatch is supposedly set to be revealed in March.
This news comes suspiciously close to Samsung’s announcement of the new Galaxy Gear smartwatch; which dropped Android in favour of Tizen. It has been an open secret that Google has been trying to limit the amount of influence Samsung has had on the Android eco-system, while the Korean company appears to be testing the waters for a potential exit from Google’s oversight. The smartwatch market could indicate how the relationship between the two is going, although both companies are going to be stuck with each other for a while longer.
